<p> The Cincinnati judge was careful to separate the hero from
his misdeeds. "Today we are not dealing with the legend," he
said before sentencing Pete Rose to five months in prison for
cheating on his taxes. Baseball's record holder for number of
hits (4,256) was also fined $50,000, and will have to spend
three months in a halfway house and do 1,000 hours of community
service. Earlier, in a courtroom only nine blocks from a street
named in his honor, Rose told the judge that he was "very
sorry, very shameful to be here today in front of you." Said
he: "I have no excuses because it's all my fault."
